Sarah Beck: Course Teacher
Having completed a degree in Social Anthropology at the University of East Anglia I spent many years traveling throughout the world, living in different cultures and working in many roles. Eventually, I realized, as Marcel Proust famously said, ‘The only real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes’! So I returned to the UK and continued my studies of yoga with a new passion.
I trained as a remedial masseuse with a group of blind students and set up a private practice. It was during this time my yoga teacher suggested I train as a yoga teacher and I enrolled upon the British Wheel of Yoga’s teacher training course. The Wheel is the largest yoga organization in the UK and it was certainly liberating to see how they taught yoga in an inclusive manner. Here students of any yogic tradition could learn to teach, where the emphasis was upon safety and making the technique of yoga available to all. It was as if I had come home! So whilst part of me still uses the information and practices I learnt within the Sivananda, Iyengar and Desikichar traditions of Yoga, I was now free to apply this knowledge and teach my students creatively and safely. Several years later I was asked to train as a Yoga Teacher Trainer for the Wheel and, following two further years training to do this, I have been thoroughly enjoying helping yoga students become wonderful yoga teachers.
In the recent past yoga was something rather strange done by the very few but these days everything has changed as yoga is practiced so widely by so many different groups of people in so many different types of venues. I have felt very fortunate to have been part of this blossoming of yoga within the UK where yoga is now taught to small children in schools, to stressed out teenagers, sportsmen and women, business executives, sufferers of multiple sclerosis, pregnant ladies…….the list goes on and on!
Whilst I continue to enjoy teaching regular yoga classes, giving workshops and teaching on national training weeks I have also simultaneously continued with my studies of Ayurveda. Ayurveda is the sister science to yoga being the traditional medical system of India. Having studied with some of the world’s foremost Ayurvedic Practitioners and authors, including Vaidya Dr David Frawley and Vaidya Atreya Smith, for the last seven years, I now also run a private Ayurvedic practice in the north west of England. Like Yoga, Ayurveda shares the same philosophical background and is also aimed at creating health, using the tools of yoga amongst many other healing modalities to unlock human potential!
