Nutrition Clinical Training

To become a confident, competent, and professional Nutritionist it is vital to receive a comprehensive clinical training as part of the course. Our clinical training hours surpass the requirements of the professional registering bodies and the National Occupational Standard for nutrition. Clinical studies are achieved through a combination of taught sessions, clinical observations (included in the course fees) and one to one clinical supervision with clients (an additional expense in year 3).

Clinical studies complement the units of the Nutrition course, building essential skills to ensure that School of Health graduates have the skills and confidence they need to start working directly with clients. This includes exploring the client-therapist relationship, case taking and progression, approaches to dietary and supplement prescription, safe practise, motivational techniques for compliance, dealing with difficult clients and reflection to improve future practice. The Clinical studies start in a safe classroom environment where students work in small groups, building skills and observing live clinics before commencing one to one work with their own clients, overseen by a supervisor.

Each Unit also includes practical case-based assignments, so each time you complete assignments you are considering the client and putting the theory you are learning about into clinical practice. Over the duration of the course, you complete 17 paper case studies and 14 min paper based cases.

The requirements at each stage of the course are as follows:

Nutrition Advisor (Units 1-4)

  • Two full days of classroom teaching covering paper-based cases and live cases studies.
  • A minimum of 10 hours online clinical observation, by attending at least 3 of the 12 live online clinics (attend as many online clinics as you can, online clinics are included in the course fees).
  • In-course assessed paper cases: 10 mini cases, 1 case study (included in the course fees).

Nutritional Therapist (Units 5-8)

  • Four full days of classroom teaching covering paper-based cases and live cases studies in more depth. Note this is in addition to the 2 days already completed during units 1-4.

Nutritional Therapist Advanced (Units 9-12)

Clinical Supervision Costs

When you are ready to start clinical supervision in Year 3 you enrol onto the clinical supervision module, there is a fee to enrol on the module and this include a supervision overview fee to the School. You also pay your supervisor direct for the one-to-one supervision you will receive. These fees vary depending on how much supervision you require. You will receive money from your clients, this goes towards your clinical supervision fees and will help with some of the costs. Please request the latest fee overview sheet for full details.

In total students complete over 500 hours of clinical training over the 3 years. This ensures that by the time you graduate you are a confident, competent therapist ready to join a register and go out and see clients.

*Students based overseas, or those with disabilities who may find it difficult to attend in person, should contact the office to discuss options to meet the clinical criteria
