World Health Day 2021: Building a fairer, healthier world

WHY is it celebrated?

The purpose of World Health Day is to raise awareness of global health issues, focusing on a different priority area each year. The aim is to bring critical issues to the attention of word leaders and highlight the importance of a specific issue in maintaining world health.

WHEN is it celebrated?

World Health Day originated from the 1948 World Health Assembly, organised by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The Assembly called for the creation of World Health Day in 1950, which is now an annual event and has been celebrated on 7th April each year since.

WHAT is this year's theme?

The theme of World Health Day 2021 is “Building a fairer, healthier world”.  The aim is to highlight the inequalities among different communities and social groups across the world which impact global health – be it from lack of clean water to an inability to access health services.  The WHO are calling on global leaders to monitor these inequalities and ensure everyone has a basic standard of living to prevent avoidable suffering, illness and death. Fair and equal distribution of Covid vaccines will be a key issue in this campaign.

HOW can I get involved?

A range of campaign materials can be downloaded from the WHO website, from social media tiles to posters and banners that can be used to raise awareness.
